Glutathione

Glutathione naturally occurs in the body. Recently, synthesized forms of glutathione have been added to soaps to whiten skin. In addition to whitening skin, glutathione soap is reputed to have antiaging properties and to be good for the complexion.

Glutathione is a natural antioxidant. In its natural form in the body, one of its main purposes is to remove toxins produced by the body. In soap, the natural antioxidant properties of the synthesized version are said to be good for the skin. The antioxidant properties are said to help maintain healthy, youthful skin by slowing the death of cells and helping to maintain the health and vitality of skin cells. Part of how glutathione helps as an antiaging treatment is by lightening the surface of the skin.

One of the primary uses for glutathione soap is to whiten skin. Glutathione works by inhibiting the skin's production of melanin, resulting in a natural lightening of the skin. Glutathione soap is often used to treat hyperpigmentation, freckles, melasma, uneven skin tone, age spots and other uneven skin tones or many other dark spots on skin.

Glutathione soap is generally considered safe. It is, however, critical to buy soaps from known, reputable companies and producers. In rare cases, counterfeit glutathione soaps have been found in Asia to contain harmful chemicals and bleaches that have caused permanent skin damage in users. This damage was a result of the other artificial bleaching ingredients, not as a result of glutathione. Glutathione is a natural ingredient without known side effects, other than its skin whitening effect, when used as a component of soap. (Excerpts by C. Earle)

Goat's Milk

Goat’s Milk is one of the most popular additives to handmade soap is goat’s milk. And rightly so. It makes a lovely, creamy, moisturizing soap. From Nature With Love says "Goat’s milk is a natural emollient that helps soothe and moisturize the skin. It contains vitamins A, B6, B12 and E. Goat’s milk has 3 times more beta-casein than cow’s milk. Caseins are easily absorbed into the skin and allow for quick hydration of dry skin. The content of triglycerides, capric, caprylic and caproic acid helps balance the skin’s natural pH and promotes natural exfoliation of dry skin."

Placenta

Although cosmetics can be made from animal and human placentas, which are very effective. Studies have shown that the use of human and pig placenta extracts is more compatible when used for skin care products. Since they are created from something biologically equal to our own skin, they are more beneficial and will not create a physical dependence. Here are some specific benefits to using placenta cosmetics and skin care products:

* The hyaluronic acid from the placenta can be used in these products as a moisturizer. Hyaluronic Acid also helps with skin problems, like scarring and wrinkles.
* The protein hydrolysate from the placenta helps fight wrinkles, as well.
* The high and low molecular extracts from placenta have many different benefits. These include stimulating skin growth, rejuvenating skin which is aging, and helping to treat acne and viral skin infections, due to its anti-viral and antiseptic qualities.

Kojic Acid

Kojic acid is an ingredient used in skin lightening products for its ability to inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme necessary for the synthesis of melanin, the skin’s pigment. This makes it useful in the treatment of Melasma, chloasma and other hyperpigmentation disorders. Kojic acid is obtained from fungus or as a by product in the fermentation process used to make sake, the Japanese rice wine. It is consumed widely in Japan for its perceived health benefits. In fact, it possesses antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant properties, and is used to prevent fruits from turning brown, to preserve the pink and red color of seafood and in cosmetics to lighten skin.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been used as skin care, beauty and hair products for many centuries in the Far East. Coconut oil can provide moisturizing benefits for the skin and is, without any comparison, an excellent hair conditioner. These days coconut oil is used as an ingredient for making skin care products, hair treatments, and body and sun protection lotions.

Coconut oil is an excellent ingredient for making the high quality soap by bringing its own unique qualities; it is naturally rich in Lauric Acid, a natural antimicrobial proven to fight viruses and bacteria. This naturally occurring defence is carried on in the soap.

A recently published study on using coconut oil on dry skin showed the oils are rapidly absorbed into the skin. This led to improved skin lipid levels, increased hydration and reduced roughness and scaling. The small molecular structure of coconut oil allows for easy absorption through the skin, giving it a soft, smooth texture. It makes an ideal ointment for the relief of dry, rough and wrinkled skin.

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet Almond Oil makes a hard bar and is very moisturizing. It is an unscented oil rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein. Sweet almond oil is one of the most popular components of skin and hair care products. Sweet almond oil is an excellent emollient that gets absorbed by the skin very easily without making you feel greasy or sticky. This oil also has the benefit of having a very mild fragrance and a very light color. It effectively moisturizes dry skin, making it look soft and glowing. The natural lubricating property of this oil also helps repair cracked and flaky skin, especially during dry, cold winters and in harsh arid climates. Almond oil can also be used to soften tough skin on the palms and the heels.

Olive Oil

Probably the best oil you can make soap with. This oil varies in color depending on the olive crop and can be golden to dark green. Packed with vitamins, minerals, and protein. The soaps made from olive oil have small bubbles but are mild and creamy.

Essential Oils

These are natural scents that are distilled directly from botanicals (flowers, leaves, petals, berries, etc).

Honey

Honey acts as an emollient and moisturizes the skin. Because it can create a soft bar of soap, it is usually used with beeswax.

Beeswax

Beeswax is used in soaps (especially those that include honey) to make a harder bar. Beeswax pellets are used widely in cosmetics as an emulsifier. It can give soap a nice honey-like smell.
